Full Description:

Public housing has not relied on the private market, making it one of the last sources of permanently affordable housing. It represents the most urgent level of housing need and immediate federal action could have a long-term impact on stabilizing the quality of life for low-income people in the US. Neoliberalism has fueled policies of disinvestment, demolition and privatization of public housing. The government has prioritized the deconcentration of poverty and the displacement of low-income people from their communities through programs such as HOPE VI. Two national alliances – the Right to the City (RTTC) & National People’s Action (NPA) – have come together in an effort to preserve and expand public housing. The HUD Work Group of RTTC completed a participatory research project that offers a new vision for public housing and calls on the US government to make stable, safe and permanently affordable housing a universal right. With more than 36 years experience in taking direct action to win policy reforms, NPA has partnered with RTTC to take direct action in realizing this new vision for public housing across the country. With just the right blend of action and ideology this workshop will leave you spinning on your praxis!
