Using Hip Hop to Promote Higher Education

Workshop Information
Event Date:
Thu, 06/24/2010 - 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Event Location:
WSU Prentis: 10
Full Description:

15 years ago the Co-founders of Hip Hop Without Borders began providing music education in K-12 schools and juvenile detention centers in California. It all started with a desire to supplement the lack of music programs in San Francisco Bay Area school districts but it has grown to incorporate motivational speaking and push youth around the world to pursue higher education. We use the name Hip Hop Without Borders to convey the message that you can be a lawyer and an MC or a doctor and a DJ because hip hop has no (career) borders. This interactive presentation will facilitate a discussion about the use of Hip Hop and other popular mediums to inspire youth to pursue higher education, why education is crucial to social justice, and how to make education attractive.
