Uniting Communities: LGBTQ Equality in Communities of Color

Workshop Information
Event Date:
Fri, 06/25/2010 - 1:00pm - 5:30pm
Event Location:
Cobo Hall: O2-43
Full Description:

Rooted in Western States Center's work around intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, and immigration/refugee status, this workshop will begin conversations on how to talk and work towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) equality, specifically for organizations of color.

Western States Center published a manual on this work, Uniting Communities: The Toolkit. The Toolkit is based on a year-long process we engaged in with four different organizations of color in Oregon, working to incorporate the intersections between LGBTQ equality and racial justice. Most of these four organizations had never had conversations about LGBTQ issues explicitly before. At the end, all had made substantial movement towards seeing the intersections.

Participants will be actively engaged through an interactive timeline from LGBTQ/immigrant/racial justice history. Then the South Asian Network, one of the case studies highlighted in the Toolkit, will present during an interview style panel about their process. Lastly, participants will engage in interactive skill-building exercises focused on issues of policing, incarceration and detention.

Western States Center will offer our framework, through the toolkit’s workshops, handouts, and case studies for participants to engage with. Participants will take away a greater understanding of the intersections of LGBTQ issues and I/R and POC. They will understand more about the issues of LGBTQ people of color and immigrants, who often fall through the cracks of our movements. Participants will also take away concrete examples of organizations of color that have gone through the process of shifting to a framework which incorporates LGBTQ equality. Lastly, participants will understand that the work their organizations are currently doing affect LGBTQ people of color and immigrants, and will hopefully take away some beginning tools for being able to incorporate that understanding into the way they do their work.
