Never before have U.S. police agencies had such vast powers to watch over us and track our activities. Over 800,000 operatives, in every U.S. city and town are collecting information on our political and religious activities, reports are filed and shared through Fusion Centers and Joint Terrorism Task Forces. State & local police work with federal agents to monitor political activists and quash dissent using familiar tactics: infiltrators, informants, agents provocateur, pre-emptive raids, mass arrests, overwhelming police presence at demonstrations... Participants in the workshop will learn about current domestic surveillance programs and gain concrete skills and tools to fight the surveillance state. Panel presentation will include an original performance by hip-hop artist Shahid Buttar. The second half will focus on strategies to restore our civil liberties, including passing local ordinances limiting law enforcement agencies, and using the Freedom of Information Act to uncover unconstitutional surveillance and infiltration. Participants will learn how to pass local legislation (model ordinance and toolkit will be provided), and how to file FOIA requests (and have the opportunity to prepare requests during the workshop).
