We have witnessed the collapse of the neoliberal economic model. Unrestrained capitalism has created a consumer society in which shopping has become the major form of individual self-expression. International financial markets have wrecked havoc on national economies. Inequality has risen in mature capitalist economies. Irrational production threatens the future of our planet through rising emissions of "green house" gases. What is the alternative to this failed system? We propose socialism (i.e., economic democracy) as the ideological paradigm which can unite various movements fighting for social justice, including the civil rights movement, the women's movement, the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender movement, the peace movement, and the ecological movement. The defining features of 21st century socialism include: 1) worker self-management, 2) preservation of markets as efficient allocators of resources, and 3) social control of investment.
