Event Date:
Thu, 06/24/2010 - 3:30pm - 5:30pm
Event Location:
TWW: 1
Full Description:

In this participatory panel discussion, we will look deeply at activists’ many, intersecting, and cross-pollinating uses of social media to share stories, news, information, and analysis from on-the-ground in Palestine and Israel. The moderator will frame this discussion within the context of the violent and ubiquitous disinformation campaigns, repression, and muzzling propagated by the Israeli government and reinforced by the US mainstream media.

The panelists will then take up some deeper questions about how we work/work together within this movement: what kinds of on-the-ground activism do we want to spark with online content, how are we centering Palestinian voices and narrative, how are we reaching out to new sources of information, how are we repurposing each other’s content, how do we coordinate our media in a participatory way, how do we respond to the constant backlash and muzzling, and who are we trying to reach with our use of social media.

Examples of creative uses of social media, such as spoof advertisements, coordinated flash mobs, and the incorporation of social media into advocacy actions, will be provided, as will examples of the effects of media activism on U.S. discourse about Palestine and Israel.
