Workshop Information
Event Date:
Wed, 06/23/2010 - 1:00pm - 5:30pm
Event Location:
Cobo Hall: D2-12
Full Description:

Using the "fishbowl" format, this workshop will explore the problems, issues and ramifications of different forms of racial, religious and ethnic profiling in the U.S., recognizing the experiences of diverse communities while working toward a sense of unity among participants with the idea of working together to end profiling through federal legislative and administrative reform.

Participating in a fishbowl, where inner and outer circles provide a format of exchange that allows people to be at times more or less vocal and thereby creates the opportunity for a unique comfort level between strangers and friends, attendees will address connections between racial, religious, and ethnic profiling in all its forms, discussing personal experience with advocacy and organizing around profiling. Facilitated discussions will begin with key individuals in the inner circle who can talk about their work or personal experiences with profiling. The first set of questions to get the discussion started will address the difficult topics often used to "divide and conquer" our diverse communities, shaped in a way that leads to unification rather than division. Discussion will also lead to an exploration of the relation between state, local, and national work as well as campaigns addressing racial/ethnic/religious profiling. Open seats in the inner circle allow for participants to flow in and out of the conversation as their interest and comfort level provide. During the conversation, questions will be taken by the facilitator and posed to the circle's conversation among attendees. This workshop will work toward resolving differences between traditionally separated groups facing varying forms of profiling, illuminating legislative and administrative goals of major racial profiling actions, and setting the stage for the next steps forward for action between groups and individuals. Followed by a film screening and panel discussion.
