Event Location:

Full Description:

Existing narratives of criminalization and mass incarceration all too often fail to center the experiences of LGBTQQ people, and particularly queer people of color, while current conversations around LGBT equality and queer liberation all too often exclude the experiences of criminalized queers. Join queer activist lawyers Joey Mogul, veteran of Chicago's Queer to the Left, and Andrea Ritchie, former member of the national organizing collective of INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence, in breaking down how queers are policed, prosecuted and punished in ways that are similar to and distinct from those of many communities ensnared in the prison industrial complex, and critically examining mainstream solutions to hate crimes that rely on the criminal legal system, including hate crimes laws. Join us in envisoning organizing strategies that recognize and challenge the ways in which policing of sex and gender serve as central tools of mass incarceration of people of color, as well as independent functions of law enforcement. We will also be sharing queer specific know-your-rights info and practical strategies for challenging criminalization and police abuse.
