The People’s Songs and Chants

This interactive workshop is designed to provide people with the lyrics and melodies to songs and the words to chants that are often used at rallies, demonstrations and marches. It intends to answer the question, “What are they saying?” so people can feel more comfortable joining the singing and chanting of old standards like “We Shall Not Be Moved,” more recent songs like “How ‘Bout Your Sons, How ‘Bout Your Daughters” written during Cindy Sheehan’s demonstration in Texas and, if collaboration is effective, brand new songs and chants composed at the USSF 2010. Participants sing, chant and play instruments during the workshop. The take-away for the participants is a USSF2010 song and chant book provided in print or as an e-book. With adequate collaboration, a companion video is also provided. After the forum, the songbook can be polished and The People’s Songs and Chants book and video can be published with proceeds to be used for future USSF events. And, very possibly, as an added bonus, a “People’s Voices” ensemble may emerge. The facilitator speaks English, some Spanish, some French and can use sign language a little. Translation and material in other languages is strongly encouraged.
