Workshop Information
Event Date:
Thu, 06/24/2010 - 1:00pm - 5:30pm
Event Location:
Cobo Hall: W2-62
Full Description:

Inspired by the Cordillera People's Day annual celebration in the Philippines that commemorates the struggle for ancestral domain and self-determination and its popular education technique of engaging thousands of participants of different tribes and tongues, this workshop will engage participants in using cultural forms such as people's teatro, music, visual art and other forms to understand and digest a rich and on-going history of people's resistance movements around the world.

During the first half of the workshop, we will examine the history of US imperialist intervention in key regions in the world—Asia/Pacific, (the Philippines, Korea, Guam), Latin America/Caribbean (Colombia, Cuba, Haiti, Honduras, Venezuela), Middle East (Palestine), Africa (Congo, Somalia, Zimbabwe, regional military formation of AFRICOM--including its present modes. We will also examine anti-imperialist practices of governments and social movements in the Americas and around the world that challenge US hegemony in their respective region.

We would like to establish new and strengthen existing relationships with anti-imperialist, progressive, economic justice, women’s rights, and migrant/immigrant rights organizations and organizations representing progressive people’s movements gathered at the US Social Forum.

* To build bridges between progressive groups in the US and around the world fighting for economic and social justice
* Promote RESIST! as an international peoples’ network to confront crisis and war
* To serve as build-up activity to the G20 caravan and demonstration in Toronto
