What newspaper, recently banned at Pelican Bay Prison in California , inspires letters like these excerpts from its prisoner subscribers? "My struggle is linked with the struggle of millions across the globe." "I am just amazed by the whole realm of science…" "This paper has made a big difference in relationships that races in here deal with each other." "I kind of like the idea that women are equal to me. But I never would have this understanding if it was not for Communism." Revolution newspaper is the main educational literature requested by prisoners from the Prisoners Revolutionary Literature Fund, which also provides other progressive and revolutionary literature. In February 2010 Pelican Bay State Prison declared Revolution banned, as has Menard Prison in IL. A panel including a representative of Revolution newspaper (an ex-prisoner) and dramatic readings of prisoner letters will open the workshop. Discussion will focus on how to mobilize a nation-wide legal and political struggle determined and massive enough to overturn this outrageous ban. The workshop is for everyone - those concerned about the U.S. mass incarceration of millions, especially people of color; those concerned about freedom of the press and speech, including for alternative media; and those who think prisoners should be able to educate themselves and engage with world events and key political, cultural and philosophical questions of the day from a unique revolutionary perspective, often transforming themselves in the process.
