Workshop Information
Event Date:
Wed, 06/23/2010 - 10:00am - 12:00pm
Event Location:
Cobo Hall: W2-66
Full Description:

Planned Parenthood Affiliates of Michigan staff, volunteers, students and interns will review a brief history of the reproductive justice movement in the United States, starting with the suffrage movement, through the legalization of birth control and abortion in the middle of last century, and more recently, the political and cultural aspects of protecting bodily autonomy in a world with such technological advancements. We will then discuss and explain what has happened since this progress was made, i.e. how hard fought rights have been chipped away through hundreds of state laws across the country. We will look specifically at these laws in Michigan (with particular attention paid to how they affect low-income and young women in our state) and discuss how we are fighting back. We will discuss the strategies that the pro-choice community in Michigan has been employing and will have our workshop attendees take action on campaigns to support common-sense, pro-prevention solutions to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
