Event Location:
WSU Prentis: 10
Full Description:

Manufacturing builds more than steel, tires, paper, and glass; manufacturing builds communities. Workers in the manufacturing sector generally earn family sustaining wages, receive adequate healthcare and when they’re too old to work, they are promised secure and comfortable retirements. But the economic benefits of sustainable manufacturing aren’t limited to manufacturing workers.

This workshop is a panel discussion bringing together a broad range of stakeholders to illustrate the importance of manufacturing as the backbone of strong communities, share stories on the devastation caused by plant shutdowns and deindustrialization, and explore strategies for saving manufacturing jobs in the US.

Potential Makeup of Panel
• Economist to give an intellectual backdrop to the discussion.
• Community leader or local political leader from a community that has faced a significant downturn in manufacturing.
• Religious leader from community impacted by a plant shutdown.
• Local union leader from a plant that has been shutdown as a result of unfair competition from imports.
• United Way Labor Outreach Coordinator from a community that still has a strong manufacturing presence.
