The US and Israeli governments and elite are actively fighting against the rights of the indigenous populations. From Haifa to New Orleans, they work to deny the right of refugees to return to their lands and homes. At the same time, they are creating new policies around permits and zoning that are creating new waves of forced displacement for people of color and poor communities in the US and for Arab and Palestinian communities inside Israel. And new laws in Arizona and the Israeli occupied West Bank require residents to proof their legal status in an attempt to criminalize indigenous people living on or returning to their homeland. This session will explore: · The history of displacement and land rights in the US and Palestine/Israel · How the US and Israeli official and de-facto policies and practices of displacement are similar and different. · What can Palestinian, Katrina, and other indigenous refugees learn from each other in their continued struggles for the Right of Return? Looking at the history, successes, and challenges for both movements. · How we can build solidarity and support for these struggles internationally.
