Ending Poverty, Not Welfare

Workshop Information
Event Date:
Wed, 06/23/2010 - 3:30pm - 5:30pm
Event Location:
WSU Student Center: 16
Full Description:

Under the Great Recession, unemployment rates for single mothers are at a 25-year high, with welfare rolls rising for the first time since TANF was passed in 1996, and the poverty rate at its highest level in 14 years.

In the coming year, Congress will begin the process of reauthorizing TANF, the 1996 legislation that created welfare "reform." Learn what low-income women-led organizations are doing to bring the voice of low-income mothers and their children, the most important stakeholders in this process, to the reauthorization of TANF/welfare "reform" in the coming year. Hear directly from women with experience in the welfare system about how we can work together to make ending poverty the goal of welfare reform, and achieve economic justice for low-income families and communities under welfare "reform."
