Crimmigration: Confronting the Great Merger

Workshop Information
Event Date:
Thu, 06/24/2010 - 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Event Location:
Woodward Academy: 1437
Full Description:

A year ago, 30 organizers, attorneys and advocates met in Sonoma, CA to build and strengthen relationships. Half the group are criminal and juvenile justice advocates, with the other half working in immigration detention and enforcement. We felt compelled to meet because of the increasing overlap between the criminal justice enforcement apparatus (local & state police, FBI, gang databases, jails, prisons, probation, parole) and the immigration enforcement apparatus (ICE, border patrol, 287(g), detention centers, secure communities). This session is a report back of the primary insight from the Sonoma meeting – that the criminal justice and immigrant detention systems have become fundamentally intermeshed, and so those working to challenge and dismantle them should approach it as a single system. Participants will share updates on collaborations that emerged from the meeting and identify new hotspots needing immediate, joint responses. We especially welcome organizations and individuals who were not present at the Sonoma meeting, but who are working directly in these areas. Be prepared to talk about concrete instances where a unified response is needed to fight this new, merged enforcement system.
