Full Description:

In this era of government supported media consolidation, independent media is an essential tool in the people’s movement-building process. Radio is still one of the most accessible broadcast mediums, and this workshop will explore the role of independent radio as both a product of and a voice for grassroots struggles. A panel of radio/community activists will discuss how to sustain, grow, and liberate more radio airwaves. Atlanta’s 37-year-old listener supported community radio station, WRFG 89.3 FM, is hosting this workshop and will share its experience in meeting the opportunities and challenges involved in organizing a radio station for the benefit of people traditionally denied access to the broadcast media. Through the workshop’s interactive format, participants will begin developing specific ideas on:

• identifying and learning from successful institutional models
• engaging more people in independent radio, especially the young
• covering local issues to clarify regional, national and international issues
• developing partnerships with global media outlets

In its mission and history, WRFG is a reflection of the US Social Forum’s goal of reclaiming the country in response to the needs of the people. WRFG opposes those forces that dehumanize and oppress people (especially economic exploitation, classism, racism, sexism, ableism, militarism, anti-immigrant chauvinism, ageism, religious discrimination, and homophobia) and supports those alternatives that uplift human dignity and give people more control over their lives. It is this mission that underlies WRFG’s slogan – your station for progressive information – and that motivates its support and work toward social change that increases equality, liberation, human rights, and justice for all people everywhere.
