Many forces are at play in development projects. They can be completely disempowering or opportunities to transform in a fight to bring real community benefits. This session will build a strategic toolbox and collective lessons for community-based development using what we know. Participants define a negotiation strategy, using leverage available, to deliver affordable housing, local hiring for prevailing-wage jobs, environmental improvements, and more. Community Benefits Agreements have been negotiated around the country. A case study will illustrate do's and don'ts: The new bridge slated to be built between Detroit and Canada along NAFTA's super highway and the country's busiest commercial border crossing will be a multi-billion dollar investment. 10,000 trucks each day burden the low-income minority communities that will be displaced in each country and already face multiple economic and industrial burdens.
