It has become illegal to speak the word “Nakba” in Israel, the self-proclaimed “only Middle East democracy” with no constitution, few rights for the 20% non-Jewish minority, and far less for those under military occupation and blockade. With all the power and control of all the land, why is Israel so threatened by this single word? Al Nakba, "the catastrophe" in Arabic, is the Palestinian equivalent of the word Holocaust, referring to their ethnic cleansing through massacres and terrorism in 1948 by Zionist militias that drove nearly a million into UN refugee camps from which they have never been allowed to return in defiance of international law. The long-suppressed truths of Israel’s “War of Independence” have been exposed by declassified Israeli archives, threatening Israel’s creation myth and more threatening, establishing the right of the Palestinian refugees to be restored to their homes and lands. If honored, this would eliminate the majority status of Jews in Israel and the hegemonic goal of Zionism. From PowerPoint slides, informational handouts on key historical facts and applicable international law, and consolidating discussion, we will then role-play key protagonist "positions" to discover potential solutions.
