This workshop will be an introduction to the 50 year political organizing career of Ella Baker through a spoken word monologue performed by a diverse group of 7 Ella's Daughters. We will then discuss Baker's tradition as a model for grassroots radical democratic organizing that focuses on the most oppressed sectors of our communities and values their strength and wisdom, with special focus on women. We will offer highlights of the work Ella's Daughters (ED) are doing in various struggles and contexts. Finally, we will involve participants in actually stitiching together patches of a social justice quilt which a group of ED artists have been working on for three years and which links multiple struggles. We will discuss how others can tap into Baker’s tradition and how it relates to the work of radical feminists of color from Audre Lorde to Chandra Mohanty. The Healing Trauma and Community Reconciliation workshop is about restoring healthy human relationships and building social cohesion. The workshop will provide basic information about what trauma is, its process, and its impact on both the inner self (thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values), the outer self (behavior and relationships), and social justice. The workshop will focus on how to facilitate healing approaches through storytelling, music and video reflections, and other techniques that promote emotional wellness. The workshop will impact the larger concentric circle of participants; empowering them through cross-cultural healing practices that build safety, protective resiliency factors, and positive individual and community outcomes. |

This workshop will share successful community-based foreclosure prevention programs and initiatives from across the country that engage residents in immediate action using participatory processes based in values of community control and self-organizing. Educating participants about new federal tenant and loan modification foreclosure protections, the workshop will highlight how tenant rights can help protect homeowners from foreclosure--showing the new opportunities of the housing crisis to unite tenants and low-income homeowners to fight the foreclosures that disproportionately affect poor people / people of color. |
