Workers Defense Project is a membership-based organization in Austin Texas, that works to achieve racial and economic justice in the workplace. Building a Grassroots Campaign from Community Based Research This workshop discusses the benefits of using industry-focused participatory research to direct a grassroots organizing campaign. Members of Workers Defense Projects' Construction Worker Committee will share their experiences in crafting a grassroots campaign based on the groundbreaking study, "Building Austin, Building Injustice: Working Conditions in Austin's Construction Industry." WDP's report has been successful in getting the federal government to launch a federal investigation into Texas' construction industry, and win local policy improvements in Austin. Participants will explore how a policy oriented campaign can strengthen organizing objective through popular education activities and identify keys steps in a campaign. Participants will learn how to use community-based research to bolster their organizing work, develop a stronger media campaign, and develop the skills of grassroots leaders.
