When they say cut backs, we say fight back! Understanding the movement to save higher education This workshop will deal with the current economic situation and how it has affected students and what students are doing nationwide to fight budget cuts and layoffs in their universities. We will first look at the causes of the crisis, then explore what alternatives have been proposed and then look more deeply into the current student movement to save higher education- focusing on student power and how it is being manifested nationwide through rallies, marches, lobbying and the passage of the student aid legislation on the federal level. We will be also discussing what the future of the student movement is, how it is working with other movements such as labor and how to continue this work forward.
