Homeless Resistance As the housing crisis deepens, more and more people are being displaced from their homes. Living on the streets, in shelters, in tent cities, in foreclosed homes, and doubled-up with friends and family. These same folks are routinely harassed by the cops, targeting low-income people of color is a central strategy of government when neighborhoods begin the process of gentrification.
But what are homeless people DOING about it?
Picture the Homeless is an NYC-based organization of homeless people, based on the principle that our perspectives must be included at all levels of decision making that impact us. We work to change negative laws and policies as we challenge the root causes of homelessness.
Starting from the assumption that homelessness is an intentional consequence of the capitalist system, this workshop explores the hidden history of homelessness as the result of conscious policies of displacement, and bring together the broader social justice movement to discuss our pioneering work to reclaim vacant property, challenge racist patterns of law enforcement, and ensure that economic development benefits all of the city's residents.

Picture the Homeless was founded on the principle that homeless people have civil and human rights regardless of our race, creed, color or economic status. Picture the Homeless was founded and is led by homeless people. We refuse to accept being neglected and we demand that our voices and expertise are heard at all levels of decision making that impact us.
We oppose the quality of life laws that criminalize homeless people in any form by the city, state and national governments. We work to change these laws and policies as well as to challenge the root causes of homelessness. Our strategies include grass roots organizing, educating homeless people about their rights, public education, changing media stereotypes, and building relationships with allies.
