The Battle for Whiteclay Goes to Student Legislative DayWhiteclay, a Reservation "border town" has 14 residents and 4 liquor stores, which sell 11,000 cans of beer per DAY. The beer is sold primarily to the residents of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, home of the Oglala Sioux. The Elders of Oglala have asked repeatedly for Whiteclay to shut down the stores, limit alcohol sales or at least ENFORCE the law, but Whiteclay has ignored these requests. The workshop will further describe the issues and explain how a group of students went to the Nebraska Senate and got legislation passed to support the Oglala Sioux request. (not perfect legislation, but a good, replicable example of how to work the process of student lobbying).

La Fundación y el Monumento en memoria de Malcolm XThe Malcom X Foundation has been working to build a memorial at the birthplace of and dedicated to the the amazing leader, Malcom X. In doing so, the Malcom X Found has created community ties between business, non-profit, and community government as well as actively incorporated the voice of the people in the neighborhood, a neighborhood (predominantly African American) which has unfortunately been challenged with crime, poverty, and the accompanying difficulties. By building the memorial, we are creating a "destination site" in the neighborhood, inviting others in and working together to make change.
