Culture, Fiction and Representation of the Americanized Samoan Woman: An Indigenous Insight The workshop examines the role of culture and fiction in the representation of the Samoan Woman. The impact of westernization or Americanization in terms of migration and social and cultural change as they pertain to Samoan women is discussed. Underlying these issues is the increasingly vocal voice of Samoan women in indigenous and migrant Samoan communities'. Participants will be engaged in panel and small group discussions as well as view video presentations of fictional works and poetry readings by Samoan artists such as Sia Figiel, Momoe Malietoa-von Reiche, and Sano Malifa which presents a view of Samoan women totally different from palagi representations in popular media. The Workshop proposes a media-friendly and culture-friendly representation of Samoan Women that best and more truthfully portrays them as vibrant, productive and integral members of society not just in their native homeland but in their adoptive communities in mainland USA.
APIs in America: Storytelling and Strategizing We seek to convene Asian and Pacific Islanders (APIs) and allies at the USSF to create a space for storytelling and strategizing. APIs are the fastest-growing minority population in the US, but our communities are often missing from national debates on some of our country's most pressing issues. How do we at the USSF create alliances to raise the voices and heighten the visibility of APIs? We ask participants to actively share about the issues they are facing in their own communities and strategies that they have used. In the interests of collaboration, NAPAWF will also speak to the work that we do on behalf of API women and girls around immigrant rights, reproductive justice and young women's leadership development.
