Dismantling Oppression - Central to Pro-Democracy MovementBuilding power for Another World and Another US means building needed anti-oppression skills. This is an essential part of building strong and effective organizations and coalitions.
This 2 hour workshop will include exercises, resources, and discussions designed to draw lessons from the experiences and knowledge of all participants. Time for individual reflection is an essential part of the design so that individuals begin to define how to be effective allies against oppression while taking care of our own physical, emotional and spiritual health.
Stimulating Grassroots Activism on Massive Scale - A Progressive DialogueWhy isn’t the progressive movement in the United States bigger, stronger, more effective across sectors, races, culture and class? We in the Independent Progressive Politics Network believe that the US Social Forum offers the activist progressive movement a great opportunity to put our heads together about this situation, and through the People’s Movement Assembly process, identify options to move forward in a more unified way.
We will assess what can be done to stimulate independent, grassroots activism on a much more massive scale around key issues like unemployment, the housing crisis, racial justice, the climate crisis, corporate control of elections, war and empire and universal health care and the strengths and weaknesses of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party as far as the building of a popular progressive movement.
Through small groups the PMA will surface options for what can be done to develop a “united progressives” approach and network that brings together third party activists, progressive Democrats and labor, community and issue-based organizers who appreciate the need for an independent, progressive alternative to our corporate-dominated political system.
