The Gibraltar Food Pantry is a community outreach program of the First Congregational United Church of Christ of Gibraltar, Michigan. It began the fifth year of operation on the first of January 2010. The First Congregational UCC Church of Gibraltar and the First Congregational UCC Church of Flat Rock are both 501c3 organizations and share a common Ministry Team.
The pantry is a client choice model which allows clients to choose items from the shelves with choices of soups & stews, canned vegetables and fruit, pasta items, tomato sauce, peanut butter, cereals, dry milk, juices and frozen protein items such as hot dogs, ground turkey, ground hamburger, ham and chicken as available thru Gleaner Food Bank.
The Gibraltar Pantry targets Gibraltar and surrounding communities’ population; Gibraltar, Woodhaven, Flat Rock, Rockwood, Trenton, and Brownstown Twp. In April 2009, as a result of the significant rise in client demand for these services, we restricted new clients to Gibraltar and an area of Brownstown that are not eligible at other area pantries. When we have someone beyond our neighbors, we provide one time service and refer them to a local resource using the handout and or pantrynet.org resource. The majority of our clients are children to middle age. Only 25% of clients are seniors. Several are grandparents raising grandchildren.
