Domestic Fair Trade Association: A Movement Based Approach to Fair TradeThe Domestic Fair Trade Association (DFTA) is an association of farmworkers, farmers, retailers, processors, businesses, and NGOs building a movement to transform our food system into one that is more healthy, sustainable, and just. We are unique in our inclusion of stakeholder groups from across the food and agriculture system. We are building a movement based on the values and principles of international fair trade, but focused on the real needs of farmworkers and family-scale farmers in North America. We believe the DFTA has the power to unite such seemingly disparate movements as farmworker justice, family farm preservation, indigenous people’s rights, Fair Trade, sustainable agriculture, and food sovereignty, around a set of common values and a common vision. In this session we will describe our history, process, and activities and present the perspectives of different stakeholder groups. Participants will gain a perspective on the problems with our food system, how the Domestic Fair Trade association seeks to address them, and how they, as individuals or organizations, can become engaged in the solutions and involved in the domestic fair trade movement. Panelist will come from member organizations as well as DFTA staff.
