Detroit City of Hope

The Detroit City of Hope is a web of committed organizations creating community, deepening conversations and developing alternative ways of living and being as we re-create our city. Drawing on decades of community based work, DCOH came together in 2007 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Detroit Rebellion and the Martin Luther King Jr. speech, Breaking the Silence, challenging the mainstream efforts to portray our city as a wasteland. Advancing Dr. King’s vision of a radical revolution in values through community practice we encourage public art, urban gardens, freedom schools, new forms of work and peace zones for life. The workshop includes: Grace Lee Boggs, Shea Howell, Ron Scott (Peace Zones for Life), Rich Feldman (UAW), Mike Wimberly (Hope District), Yusef Shakur (Urban Network) Myrtle Williams and Wayne Curtis (Feedom/Freedom Growers). Posing a new vision for the city and concrete strategies moving toward it, it emphasize the “Urgency of Now” and how we sustain work for the Long Haul Shaped by movements of the last century this multigenerational workshop engages activists reflecting on experiences in developing life sustaining community and ideas for revolutionary change.
