One of the core principles underlying Common Fire's work is that the overwhelming suffering and destruction in today's world are not the result of isolated political or economic problems. They're manifestations of the underlying culture from which they surge.
Common Fire helps create communities that manifest in the here and now the more just and sustainable world we all deserve. In our nearly decade of work, in addition to building the first LEED platinum certified green building in NY, rated as the "The Greenest Building in the Eastern US" and establishing it as the Tivoli Co-op, a supportive home to people engaged in critical social change and environmental work; we have spent extensive time listening to the needs of "Cultural Creatives", those people most often ahead of their times in creating new ways of living and working together in a rapidly changing world. What we've heard is a yearning to live more in line with values, to more holistically address core issues, and to work and live in community. Over the next five years Common Fire aims to establish several neighborhood/village-scale communities in easy access to major urban centers with affordable green housing, retreat centers, multi-use office spaces, gardens, and more. These communities will take the work of our housing co-op to another level, operating on a larger scale and allowing residents to meet far more of their needs on-site. And it will have an important focus on working with and training people from outside the communities
These ideas and our vision for transformational communities are developed more fully in our vision document, which is available by e-mail or hard copy. Please send inquiries to info@commonfire.org. The vision has also been made in to a beautiful new video: www.commonfire.org/video
