Beyond Walls and Cages: Bridging Immigrant Justice & Prison Abolition Struggles This workshop seeks to support coalitions among immigrant rights, prison abolition, and anti-militarization organizing and activist projects. What kinds of shared analysis and strategies can create communities where people are safe, free to move or to stay put, and empowered to participate in building a more just collective future? This workshop explores strategies for breaking free of paralyzing activist frameworks that insist reform and revolution are irreconcilable opposites. Drawing from the work and analysis of communities most impacted by prison expansion and the criminalization of immigration, and foregrounding Andrea Smith’s concept of the Three Pillars of White Supremacy, we will explore strategies that draw from an engaged analysis of power and difference that can help guide mutual (inclusive) strategies and practices for change. Workshop participants will be presented with scenarios drawn from recent activist efforts and collectively develop strategies for campaign development and coalition building. Each group will present its proposals to the workshop as a whole and we will conclude with a discussion of what was learned, difficulties or stumbling blocks, and fruitful possibilities for future organizing.
