Organizing for Power and Collective LiberationOrganizing for Power and Collective Liberation is an interactive, multi-media presentation/workshop by Lisa Fithian offering insights and lessons about how change is made from 35 years of organizing. The workshop will exploring key building blocks for change including power, collective liberation, building organization and winning strategic campaigns.
Throughout history people’s movements, workers and youth have won basic rights and protections for their community and the environment using strategic direct action which can creatively liberate spaces, shift the balance of power, offer alternatives and pressure decision-makers to reconsider their actions. We will look at concrete examples of how creative direct action has built community power and how we can work in alignment with one another across differences in race, class, culture, strategy, tactics and goals.
Greening the Emerald City: Bringing Together Environmental and Community-based OrganizingBayview Hunters Point is a low income, mostly African American corner of San Francisco, stressed by gang violence, police violence, the toxic residues of the naval shipyard, high unemployment and gentrification. The Hunters Point Family agency runs programs for at-risk youth that teach conflict resolution, self esteem, food growing and urban agriculture. They maintain two large community gardens. Earth Activist Training teaches permaculture design with a grounding in spirit and a focus on organizing and activism. In this workshop, we share our own experience of collaboration and explore the factors that make for successful links between environmental and community-based organizing.
