As unemployment rates continue to rise in areas throughout the US, and people continue to lose their homes in what constitutes the largest loss of land for people of color since the end of reconstruction, the safety net across the nations is crumbling. Using budget shortfalls as an excuse, local governments have moved to de-fund badly needed public services, selling off the public sector to private interests, and rolling back wages and labor protections for workers. Throughout the country labor-community coalitions have emerged not only to fight back against the privatization of public resources, but also to provide alternatives for filling the budget gap. Through this interactive workshop we hope to showcase some of the struggles currently taking place.
