We know that NAFTA erased millions of decent jobs in the US and Canada as factories moved to Mexico to exploit cheaper labor. But if more jobs went to Mexico, why did twice as many Mexicans flee Mexico for the US after NAFTA? How can the swelling ranks of the unemployed in the US find common cause, not blame, with the rising tide of immigrants?

Help us connect NAFTA’s dots, from displaced workers in Detroit to displaced farmers in Chiapas, in this interactive tri-national workshop. Guest speakers include trade justice movement leaders from Mexico and Canada, a US worker who recently watched his factory move to Mexico, and a Mexican worker recently forced to immigrate to the US. Each will tell how NAFTA-pushed displacement impacts their daily lives. We’ll also invite you to share stories of NAFTA’s impacts in your community.

The workshop offers new tools to bring home this critical discussion of NAFTA’s cross-border impact and to push for a more just trade model. We’ll perform an interactive play illuminating NAFTA’s tri-national blow to workers and watch a short film exposing the roots of migration. We’ll end by discussing concrete upcoming opportunities to replace NAFTA with trade justice.
