Los nuevos medios de comunicación y los movimientos sociales

By show casing everything from simple wikis and online communities to other cutting edge technologies to promulgate the spread of techniques and ideas that have been kicking around since the Neolithic. We’ve gathered examples of what people are doing in social, political and sustainability movement (stuff) and what other people are doing to utilize new media in other movements (communication) and have synthesized the two (communicating stuff). In addition we provide resources and tools for making the most of the latest technologies and organizational tools and a “general how to” guide to using the Internet to achieve your goals. Participants will leave with an understanding of the new media as social change tapestry and a set of resources that will enable them to make a few new stitches of their own. We have gone to great lengths to insure our presenters represent as wide a gamut of identities as possible.

Using an open, energetic and absolutely bouncy presentation leaders from the SB Student Housing Coop, Grass Roots Gaia, the Cooperative Food Empowerment Directive, Permaculture TV and the California Center for Coop Development will provide participants a road map of to the world of New Media and the implications it has for those in social justice movements. We intend to give an open and accessible workshop that would provide equal access to tools and resources that often remain locked away from many activists behind the esoteric doors of privilege. Our presenters represent an economic and racial convergence from many peripherals of the contemporary United States.
A few decades ago rejection by the private sector could mean the death of a movement. Recent developments in new media and the culture surrounding it has democratized the once exclusive and exorbitantly expensive tools necessary for wide spread communication, organization and mobilization. What was once the exclusive domain of a few with money and influence is now an open playground to anyone with passion and time.
Given that youth has historically had an abundance of both these prerequisites it is not surprising then that New Media culture has grown around and with them. Research done by both MIT and the Digital Youth Project “today’s youth [while] engaging in negotiations over [their identity] as did their predecessors, they are doing this while the contexts for communication, friendship, play, and self-expression are being reconfigured through their engagement with new media”.
Using research done by MIT and the Digital Youth Project we plan to provide workshopers with a geography of New Media in the furtherance of social goals,as well as examples and ideas from both cooperative and private success stories
