Landslide is an urban farming and sustainable living project in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. We started in 2007 hoping to become a secure, community-based source of free food for our neighborhood. Over the past three years we’ve worked hard to navigate the complex landscape of city government and community development organization to gain control of several acres of farmland and additional vacant houses to use for volunteer housing.

In many rustbelt cities like Pittsburgh, blocks and blocks of houses are sitting vacant leading to ever increasing neighborhood blight, economic and social deterioration of once vibrant communities. Developers have long been able to sweep in to these areas to build big box stores or housing developments, but grassroots community groups rarely have the opportunity to gain access to these properties for community-based projects.

Members of Landslide and a staff attorney from Regional Housing Legal Services will present the experience at Landslide as a case study on how a small radical collective was able to navigate the complex boondoggle of city bureaucracy and urban development organizations, to transform a blighted area into a community based urban farm and model for urban sustainable living.
