There are various community radio stations, programs and projects that are using radio as a tool for building and organizing their communities. The strategies that the proposed groups use range from running Low Power FM radio stations, doing media trainings and producing radio programs, organizing a collective to produce weekly programing, using radio to develop leadership among youth, spreading information on labor rights, constructing a cultural common ground, using the radio to facilitate communication between people incarcerated and their loved ones on the outside, or denouncing police brutality.
The goal of this workshop is to share experiences of groups that are utilizing radio to organize their communities. This means discussing results (won campaigns) as well as process (how they organize their radio.) The audience is grassroots, base-building organizations- especially immigrant organizations, youth, and those organizing around the prison industrial complex- that might be interested in 1) applying for a Low Power FM Radio Station in the next filing window, 2) exploring radio as a useful strategy for some of their existing organizational goals (building leadership, etc..)
