Join us as we discuss our work: The National Welfare Rights Union has been a entity across the country since 1966, where its earliest roots can be traced to New York under the guidance of George Wiley. Later, Ms. Johnnie Tillman became the philosophical foundation of the organization which works to provide advocacy support for welfare recipients along with fighting for the rights of poor people in general. The NWRU today is in a state of transition, as the collapse of the American economy has dictated new forms of struggle. The advent of irreversible rising numbers of low income persons and exploding numbers of welfare recipients has brought into focus the need to have national and international discussions on steps that eliminate poverty. Practices that strengthen the capacity of this population to mount a campaign with that outcome in mind, are being devised, and as a participant of "Detroit Highlighted", we will offer a Truth Commission that records the testimony of the victims of poverty in their own words.
