Mobilization for Climate Justice

Polar bears and big environmental organizations have left little room in the climate debate for the voices of people who suffer the most from climate change. We will explore climate justice organizing, direct action tactics and media strategies that are driven by low income communities and communities of color. This is an interactive workshop.

Internationally, and at every level of government in the U.S., climate policy is becoming a high priority. In many cases, climate change is used as a cover for corporate-sponsored policies that are not in the public interest. Carbon trading and offsets are the most destructive, counterproductive example of this. In other cases, people are developing innovative solutions to the climate crisis that actually reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These include local policies like Oakland’s Climate Action Plan, and proposals for international policies that make polluters pay rather than pay polluters as is the case under the U.N.’s market-based framework.
