MILK NOT JAILS Ice Cream Social Report back

MILK NOT JAILS took its agenda to the U.S. Social Forum this summer to introduce people across the nation to our concerns about the urban-rural connection. Hundreds of people came out for our ice cream social after a challenging week of workshops, People’s Movement Assemblies and networking. At Milliken Park on the Detroit River, we took a break from conference rooms and convention center hallways to do some popular education about rural economic policy and how it impacts criminal (in)justice policy in New York State.

My name is India and on a recent april 21 I celebrated my 18th year of life.Since 16 I have had a passion for activism, influenced by the beautiful years of the 50s the 60s and the 70s,which I had come to find the beauty of those years following my interest in studying WWII.Whew.That was a mouthful.

US Social Forum Highlights Detroit as "Solution City"

Posted by: Jackie Smith, Co-coordinator of USSF Writers Network (ussfwriters2010.blogspot.com)

Crowds of weary-looking activists and organizers mustered the energy for the US Social Forum’s fifth and final day of activities. They spent the morning sessions learning about local organizing and coalition work presented in two dozen “Detroit Highlighted” workshops. These workshops were a feature of the USSF aimed at lifting up Detroit’s stories of success as a counter to popular images of the city’s desolation and decay.

THE US SOCIAL FORUM AND AN ANGEL NAMED JIHAD

The 2010 US Social Forum in Detroit, Michigan, brought thousands from across the nation and around the world . At 3 p.m, June 22, I began walking towards the place where I had seen people march-mobilizing earlier. I immediately bumped into another group wearing blue tees that read, "I AM TROY DAVIS," a death-row prisoner presumed to be innocent; same old story: no murder weapon found, no material evidence, seven of nine witnesses recanted previous testimonies against Mr. Davis.

NNOMY's Workshop on Countering Military Recruitment

In 2004, AFSC helped found the National Network Opposing Militarization of Youth (NNOMY). Today, AFSC was involved in a NNOMY-sponsored workshop about countering military recruitment of young people. I thought you might be interested in looking at some of the information that was presented at the workshop.

From Atlanta to Detroit: A Canadian view

Three years ago, I followed my heart to Atlanta, Georgia, to attend the first U.S. Social Forum. I had attended several World Social Forums and was convinced that this new way of organizing was building social movements in a more democratic and inclusive way.

I was also part of a failed attempt to organize a social forum in Canada that hit against the shoals of national conflicts. So when I heard there was to be a U.S. Social Forum, I knew I had to go.

Have ride, need bed!

As of 9:50 CST, I have a ride, but still no place to put my 71 year old bones. Have pruners trowel and gloves and would be happy to exchange some labor and Extension Master Gardener expertise for a real bed!

A response will get you my cell #. Thx!
